Why does my high school provide this opportunity?

The Senior Year Plus program was enacted in 2008 to help students become more engaged in high school and to give them an opportunity to get a jump start on college.

Providing rigorous college credit opportunities helps students bridge the gap between completing high school and starting college. Joint enrollment through their local high school and Kirkwood Community College, provides students with the opportunity to supplement their high school curriculum with challenging college courses that award them high school credit and college credit that would not otherwise be available.

Kirkwood serves the Iowa county area schools with the following types of Senior Year Plus Programs:
  • Postsecondary Enrollment Options,  PSEO through Online ATAW courses and KTS Classes
  • Onsite Concurrent Enrollment Courses,  College credit courses onsite in the high schools
  • Career Academies,  Sequences of career focused, college credit classes

How do I get the textbooks for the courses?

Textbooks are provided to the students free of charge. The cost of any textbook in a Senior Year Plus class should seem invisible to the high school student. Success in any class is directly connected to having the textbooks in the students' hands the first day of class.

All academy and onsite classes will have the textbook available the first day of the class.  These books are provided by the students' school, just like their other high school classes.  PSEO course textbooks are picked up by the student in their high school counselor's office by the first scheduled day of class. The Williamsburg High School participates in PSEO classes at the Iowa County Center and they may pick them up at the center office. The final day of PSEO registration, July 29th for Fall 2011 registration and December 15th for Spring 2012, is the date that guarantees the delivery of the books by the first day of class.

If a student does not return a PSEO textbook to the counselor's office at the completion of the course, the student will be billed for the cost of the book. Williamsburg High School students are under the same regulation but need to return them to the Kirkwood Iowa County Center. Books are the property of Kirkwood and are loaned to the student for the duration of the academic semseter. PSEO books that are not returned to Kirkwood by the deadline will be charged directly to the student's account. The return of all academy and onsite class books fall under the student's high school's textbook return policy.

What happens if I drop a PSEO class?

Kirkwood students are allowed to drop classes without charge
during the first five days of the semester.  High school students
choosing to drop or withdraw from their college credit classes after
the first five days follow the College drop policies by filing an
Individual Course Changes Form with the Iowa County Center.
The high school principal and/or counselor’s signature is required
to complete the form. Textbooks and course materials loaned to the
student for the withdrawn class are to be returned to the Iowa
County Center with the submission of the Individual Course
Changes Form.
Beginning on the sixth day of class, the failure of a student to
complete the enrolled course or otherwise receive credit requires
the student, if over eighteen years of age, to reimburse the school
district for the cost of the enrolled course.  If less than eighteen
years of age, the responsibility for the costs related to the
incomplete and non-credit work are directed to the owner of the
parent, guardian, or custodian’s signature on the enrollment. The
only exception being that a College Petition for Policy Waiver Form is
submitted by the student and approved by the College as
documentation of justifiable reason for a tuition charge refund to the
student’s record.
If the Petition For Policy Waiver Form is not approved, charges
remain on the student’s record and the school district is billed for the
course. The family and/or student are responsible for repaying the
school district the amount of tuition not to exceed $250 per course.
Petitions for Policy Waiver may take up t o 3 weeks for a decision
from the College.
